SlipStream uses acceleration, compression and network optimization to enhance the online experience for dial and broadband subscribers, while significantly reducing bandwidth requirements. SlipStream uses adaptive data compression, combined with caching and network optimization, to streamline text, graphics, Flash and Web-based emails, including attachments. Superior Compression
Data compression methods can be divided into two types: Lossy data compression and lossless data compression. Lossy methods are popular for compressing rich media, such as video, audio or pictures. Lossy compression is achieved by discarding information without severely affecting the user's perception of the subject. A trade-off is created between quality and compression. In the case of text data, lossy compression is not appropriate. Every byte must be recovered to maintain the integrity of the data.
SlipStream Data uses lossless compression for text data including plain text, HTML, Javascript and Content Style Sheets (CSS) and lossy compression for images. The core technologies behind our acceleration solutions are our innovative, on-line and tunable lossless compression algorithms.
Leading the way in lossless compression
With SlipStream's leading technology, text-based files such as HTML can be compressed as much as 50 times smaller than their original size, or 7 times smaller than with commonly used compression algorithms such as Lempel-Ziv (LZ). In an independent analysis, SlipStream completed the first load of a Web page 7.33 times faster than traditional dial access. This performance is enhanced up to 19X faster using SlipStream NOW!Imaging.
Superior graphic compression
Beyond astounding compression ratios with text, the Engine can also expedite image retrieval. Graphic formats, such as JPEG and GIF, are already compressed, so further acceleration typically results in loss of image quality. But unlike competitors, SlipStream uses industry-leading image compression algorithms to further reduce files by up to 20% without image quality loss.
