SlipStream Technology Helps Major ISP Achieve Success with Accelerated Dial-up Internet Access
More than 400,000 paying subscribers at September 30, 2003 now using United Online's accelerated dial-up services
WATERLOO, Ontario, December 11, 2003 - SlipStream Data Inc. today announced that more than 400,000 paying subscribers from United Online Inc.'s (Nasdaq:UNTD) NetZero and Juno Internet access brands are using accelerated dial-up services enabled by SlipStream's technology. In April 2003, United Online, the nation's leading provider of value-priced Internet access through its NetZero, Juno and BlueLight Internet consumer brands, launched two accelerated dial-up services-NetZero HiSpeed and Juno SpeedBand. At September 30, 2003 these accelerated dial-up users accounted for approximately 15 percent of United Online's total 2.7 million paid subscribers.
"SlipStream's sophisticated technology was instrumental to the successful launch of NetZero HiSpeed and Juno SpeedBand," said Gerald J. Popek, EVP and chief technology officer. "Our high standards for quality service were key to this success, and SlipStream's accelerated dial-up technologies helped us ensure that those high standards were maintained."
SlipStream's web accelerator technologies compress, optimize and streamline web content after it leaves the server, providing a dramatic improvement in web-surfing speed, which is important for dial-up users who either don't have access to high-speed cable or DSL services, or don't want to pay the higher prices charged for broadband services. Customers surfing the Internet with these technologies will find that web pages download up to five times faster than traditional dialup.
"United Online has proven to be a key customer win for SlipStream because they have been responsible for defining this market segment," said Ron Neumann, president of SlipStream Data. "United Online was one of the first ISPs who understood how our technology could be a real enabler and differentiator of dial-up services."
It is estimated that two-thirds of the approximately 70 million US households with Internet access today use dial-up connections. Over the next four years, the total Internet access market in the US is expected to grow to more than 80 million households, with approximately 45% still using dial-up connections.
